Ball Bearing Test Results. The following test, conducted by an independent testing agency, compared the Extreme Pressure properties in the Shell Four Ball and Timken methods of standard fluid lubricated and ZERO G treated ball bearing. The test results, as shown below, concluded that the ZERO G treated components greatly increased the load carrying capabilities of the bearings with each lubricant tested.

FOUR BALL METHOD (ASTM D-2783)

SAE 30 Straight Mineral Oil

BEARINGS HIGHEST NON-SEIZURE LOAD, KG WELD POINT, KG LOAD WEAR INDEX, KG
Normal 63 160 26.14
Zero G Treated 80 200 34.27

High Performance Racing Motor Oil SAE 60

BEARINGS HIGHEST NON-SEIZURE LOAD, KG WELD POINT, KG LOAD WEAR INDEX, KG
Normal 100 200 41.79
Zero G Treated 160 315 72.49

X-18 MD Multi-Purpose Gear Lube SAE 90/140

BEARINGS HIGHEST NON-SEIZURE LOAD, KG WELD POINT, KG LOAD WEAR INDEX, KG
Normal 126 315 61.93
Zero G Treated 180 620 82.77

TIMKEN METHODS (ASTM D-2782)

SAE 30 Straight Mineral Oil

BEARINGS HIGHEST O.K. LOAD, LBS UNIT PRESSURE, PSI
Normal 126 315
Zero G Treated 160 620

Zero G ExampleRoller Bearing Test Results. A thermocouple was attached to the outer race and bearing (not ZeroGed) was subjected to 250# radial load, 10000 RPM, with a jet stream of MIL-L-7808 directed onto the bearing. Bulk oil temperature was measured just behind the jet at 175°F. Under these conditions the outer race stabilized at 250°F.

Oil stream was shut off and the bearing failed after six minutes. Outer race temperature had increased to 335°F. Failure was due to broken retainer. This same test was performed on three bearings and failure time was maximum 6 minutes, minimum 3 minutes.

A ZERO G coated bearing was subjected to the same test conditions as above. After oil stream was shut off , outer race temperature increased to 425°F after 38 minutes of running time, and the bearing showed no signs of failure.

Temperature rise was not steady, but observations showed a tendency to stabilize about every 50°F, and outer race temperature remained stable at 425°F.

Application: Bearings and Gears, Dry Lubrication test for endurance during absence of standard Lubrication in Helicopter transmissions for U.S. Army.
Purpose of Test: To improve operating life in bearings during emergency no-lube. Thirty minute test period.
